Life in prison for Alberta man convicted of killing Metis hunters

Jan 6, 2023 | 5:57 PM

EDMONTON – A judge has sentenced an Alberta man who killed two Metis hunters to life with no chance of parole for 13 years.

Anthony Bilodeau was found guilty in May of second-degree murder in the death of Maurice Cardinal and manslaughter in the death of Jacob Sansom.

Bilodeau’s father, Roger Bilodeau, was convicted of manslaughter in the two killings and earlier sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The victims had been out hunting for moose when they were later shot and left on the side of the road near Glendon, northeast of Edmonton, in 2020.

The Crown had said that the Bilodeaus took the law into their own hands when they chased down the hunters because they believed they had tried to steal from their family farm.

Lawyers for the father and son argued at trial that the shooting was in self-defence.

Justice Eric Macklin said his sentencing decision that the two hunters were innocent.

A spokesperson for the victims’ family, Andrea Sandmaier says no amount of justice can ease their pain.

Defence lawyer Brian Beresh says he plans to file an appeal.
