County Council meets for first time in 2023
County of Grande Prairie held their first council meeting of the new year on Monday. Some highlights include:
- Council approved a revised fire service agreement with the Town of Sexsmith. The original five year agreement, which came into effect on January 1, 2021, was amended to better reflect current practices. The agreement will continue to run until the end of 2026.
- County council also approved $243,00 in emergency capital improvement repairs to address erosion in the ditch along 140 Avenue near Trader Ridge.
- Administration was directed to send a letter of concern to the Premier regarding the decision to discontinue medivac fixed wing air ambulance service provided by Alberta Health Services at rural airports.
The County will also be launching temporary safety measures at the traffic circle near Five Mile Hall soon. The measures, which were approved during the meeting, include the addition of flashing lights to some of the existing signs, and reduced speed limit signs in advance of the roundabout. The County is also working on more permanent safety measures in that area, including visual banner in the center of the roundabout, in order to better alert drivers, as well as additional lighting in that area, but there is no word on when those measures might be put into place.
A new Director of Community Services was also given a warm welcome during the meeting. Darryl Martin joins the County after 15 years in Emergency Response Management with Alberta Health Services. Martin has also spent 19 years as both a ground and air ambulance paramedic with Alberta Emergency Medical Services. He was also given the added duties of Deputy Director of Emergency Management for the County.
