Hens, flights among highlights from Grande Prairie City Council’s January 23 meeting

Highlights from the January 23 meeting of Grande Prairie city council include:

– Council says it’s working with the Grande Prairie Airport to bring more flights to Grande Prairie. This was in response to a letter from the President of CDN Controls Ltd. Dean Fraser’s letter saying economic opportunities remain attractive in the area and businesses like his rely on accessibility to the region to take advantage of these opportunities. The letter also says having flights helps recruit skilled workers and would enhance business development and partnerships.

– Administration will look at a request from a delegation to raise the number of urban hens allowed per operation. The delegation asked for it to be raised to six from four. They add there have been no complaints from neighbours since the urban hens idea was first approved. The city says there are 16 active urban hen operations in Grande Prairie with two applications pending. The delegation says having chickens means less food waste as this can be fed to the hens and that this is also a good way to reach kids where food comes from.

– Council approved some changes to Eastlink Centre memberships. This includes amalgamation and price optimization for senior, student and youth fees; eliminating six-month and pre-paid annual memberships and the introduction of a new membership type that includes discounts for birthday parties and city programs and include things like skate rentals and sharpening at the Design Works Centre. The city says the number of memberships grew from 1,840 to 2,828 in the last six months of last year… a 53 per cent increase. It credits hiring a membership & growth coordinator for the increase.
