M.P. Zimmer responds to Canfor Chetwynd sawmill and plant closure
British Columbia’s Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies Member of Parliament Bob Zimmer is putting the blame for the closure of Canfor’s sawmill and pellet plant in Chetwynd at the feet of both the federal and B.C. government.
In a release, Zimmer says a lack of access due to ever increasing closures by anti-resource development governments is causing families to lose their jobs and livelihoods.
He adds the federal government’s plans to remove access to 25 per cent of lands and 25 per cent of oceans by 2025, and 30 percent by 2030 is going to continue to have negative consequences on Northern Canadians for years to come.
Canfor announced on Wednesday its plan to permanently close its Chetwynd operations, putting as many as 157 employees out of work. The closure is expected in April or May and the news came just two days after the mill reopened following a holiday curtailment.
