Former GPPL Board Chair recognized with Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal

A former Grande Prairie Public Library Board Chair has received a Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Award.

Nicole Chappell, who first joined the GPPL in 2018, is being honored for her work in changing the way the board did business in 2020 to ensure the library could thrive throughout the pandemic and educating new board members on the philosophy of library work, why libraries should supply barrier-free intellectual freedom and the role it plays in making the City of Grande Prairie a desirable place to live.

Chappell said in a release, “It was my privilege to serve on the Board for five years and serve as Chair for two. The Grande Prairie Public Library is an essential part of the community and I am very grateful that I was given the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way.”

During her time on the board, she spoke freely about a challenging time in her life, feeling isolated, but because of the library programs and the community it created, she was able to get through that period of time and become a part of the community.
