COUNTY SNOW REMOVAL

Changes made to Winter Road Maintenance Policy in County

Feb 2, 2023 | 12:01 PM

The County of Grande Prairie Council has approved changes to its Winter Road Maintenance Policy.

The changes sets forth are a priority system for clearing snow and ice off of County roads after significant snowfall.

High-volume, hard surfaced arterial roads will receive top priority, being cleared after 8 cm of accumulated snow, and ideally being completed within three business days.

Gravel surfaced roads will be next, being cleared once 15 cm is accumulated, with the goal to complete clearing within five business days.

Hamlets and residential subdivisions will have their own dedicated crews, which will be activated once 15 cm of snow falls, with priority being given to high-volume roads and school zones.

The policy also stresses that multiple snow falls within a short period of time, or frigid conditions may affect the cycles, adding winter road maintenance will be suspended if temperatures dip to -35 or colder.
