New mental health initiative in Grande Prairie drawing a lot of interest

Feb 12, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Recovery College offers various courses that focus on mental wellness.

The courses they offer now are based around boundaries, anxiety, self-disclosure, and interpersonal relationship skills.

Team lead Megan Delaney says there is a lot of interest already even though Recovery College is fairly new.

Delaney says the focus is on mental wellness.

“Each of our programs supports something different. So, for example, (in) the boundaries course, we teach coping mechanisms or ways to set boundaries, recognize boundaries and we practice doing that in the course.”

“We have (the) self-disclosure course that teaches our clients how much to share, and when to share information.”

Delaney says the hope is to add courses for youth and seniors that would fill some gaps in the community.

She adds all courses are free and are offered online and in person.

“In person has been a little bit more popular just because we have a little bit more flexibility where we can actually offer them in other facilities as well, so we can do private courses in their facility. It’s kind of taken off a little bit more on that end for us.”

Delaney says they had what she calls “some really good feedback.”

“They definitely take a lot from the practicing and how engaging it is to be in the courses. Our facilitators are all lived experience and they’ve all either have been in the same situation or are currently in (one).

“We’ve heard a lot in that it helps in that sense to know that it’s not just being taught to them by somebody who’s read a course, it’s somebody who actually understands and has been in the position.”

More information can be found here. Delaney says anyone interested in more information, private courses, or anything like that can also call her at 780-402-4532.
