March marks Fraud Prevention Month in Alberta

Mar 1, 2023 | 1:15 PM

This month Alberta RCMP and the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Associations (ACCPA) are putting their focus on fraud prevention.

Each week the campaign will get a new ‘theme’ emphasizing safe online practices, and how these fraudulent scams affect their community.

Alberta RCMP Provincial Economic Crime Team, Corporal Sean Milne said in a release, ” Scammers will try every trick in the book to convince a target that their request is legitimate.”

This week the ACCPA and RCMP are highlighting online scams and fraud, which include; romance scams, phishing emails, job scams, buy and sell fraud, lottery or prize scams, tech repair scams, and impersonation scams.

To better protect yourself, they suggest using strong passwords, avoiding sharing personal information online, and refraining from sharing bank information.

Milne said in the same release, “If you feel like something is off about an interaction, you’ve likely picked up on a red flag. Remember that if it’s too good to be true, it usually is.”
