Peace region projects included in provincial highways capital plan

The province has announced details of its $8 billion commitment in Tuesday’s budget to Alberta’s highways and transportation corridors.

Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen says over $2 billion of that capital plan is earmarked for improving the province’s highway network.

“This funding is for the planning, design and construction of major highway and bridge projects across the province. We are investing in improvements to key economic corridors that provide vital links to markets in and out of Alberta, supporting businesses exporting goods and importing products, and also helping Alberta families get home safely.”

Dreeshen adds it is part of the government’s commitment towards growing the economy.

“This $8 billion announcement that we have made is actually $718 million more than last year’s budget. So in this capital plan, we are making strategic investments to support the development of economic corridors that will help create employment opportunities for Albertans, and foster economic growth across the province now and for years to come.”

A total of $1.3 billion has been committed over the next three years to highway and bridge projects across Northern Alberta.

That includes $161.8 million for construction of the La Crete bridge, $84.1 million for the twinning of Highway 40 south of Grande Prairie, and $77.2 million towards widening Highway 40 north of Hinton.
