Minister Savage met with Minister Guilbeault regarding oilsands tailings pond leak

Alberta’s environment minister says the province has not seen evidence of waterway or drinking water contamination due to toxic seepage at an oilsands tailings pond.

Sonya Savage and her federal counterpart Steven Guilbeault say they will work together to understand why government officials and the public were not notified of the seepage.

The issue was discovered last May, but didn’t become public until nine months later.

First Nations in the area were also not updated after initial notification of discoloured water being found on the site.
