Court update: Sentences in manslaughter and drug arrests, stay of proceedings in case involving sex-related charges

Mar 20, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Sentencing date set in manslaughter case

Alberta Justice says the man charged in connection with the death of a High Prairie man in October of 2019 will be sentenced in May.

Darcy Lane Joseph Weesemat will be sentenced on manslaughter, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and possession of a prohibited firearm May 8 in Peace River court.

He was charged after the death of 35-year-old Christopher Lyle Cunningham October 20, 2019, at the Atikameg First Nation.

RCMP said at the time they got a report at 7:00 a.m. that day of a deceased male.

They found Cunningham dead on a road.

Stay of proceedings in sex charges case

Alberta Justice says a stay of proceedings is in place for one of the court proceedings against a Beaverlodge man facing sex-related charges involving minors.

The man, who we are not naming because of a court-ordered publication ban that prohibits the release of any information that may identify the victims, had been ordered to stand trial on charges of sexual assault and invitation to sexual touching. That trial was supposed to take place February 28 to March 3 in Grande Prairie court.

RCMP said in March of 2021 they had been getting reports of allegations of sexual interference that happened in 2016.

In February of last year, this same suspect agreed to a 12-month peace bond in a second proceeding while all six charges in a third proceeding were dismissed in March of last year.

One-year jail sentence for one of two people charged after drug bust

Alberta Justice says one of the two people charged after a 2021 drug arrest has been handed a one-year jail sentence.

Jason Holtz was given the sentence on a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking March 15 in Grande Prairie.

A stay of proceedings is in place for eight other charges against Holtz and all charges against co-accused Renae Arnold.

They each had been facing a half-dozen trafficking counts plus other charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of property obtained by crime.

They were arrested after the search of a home near 102 Street and 107 Avenue on April 19, 2021.

GHB, cocaine, fentanyl and heroin were among the items seized.
