University, college sports roundup: Local players part of national U Sports women’s hockey champions

Calgary’s Mount Royal University Cougars are the women’s hockey champions of Canadian university sports.

They beat Concordia 4-3 in overtime in Sunday’s championship game in Montreal.

The Canadian Press reports that the Cougars got a goal with two seconds left in the third period to tie the game 3-3 to force overtime.

Grande Prairie’s Athena Hauck had an assist on one of the Cougars’ goals. Spirit River’s Tianna Yaremko is also with Mount Royal.

Mount Royal had gone into the eight-team final as the eighth seed.

On the men’s side, the University of New Brunswick beat the University of Alberta 3-0 in the final played Sunday in Charlottetown.

The Golden Bears roster includes Cam Wiebe from Fairview and Wyatt McLeod from Dawson Creek. Fairview’s Rachel Wiebe is an assistant coach with the Golden Bears.

The University of Calgary, which includes Peace River’s Carter Massier, lost 4-2 to UPEI in the quarter-final round.

U Sports Volleyball

Wanham’s Quinn Pelland and Mount Royal University won the consolation final at the U Sports women’s volleyball nationals in Vancouver, beating the University of Quebec at Montreal 3-0.

The Cougars lost their opener 3-2 to Manitoba the defeated Brock 3-2 in their first consolation round game.

UBC won the national championship, beating Trinity Western 3-2 in the final.

ACAC

Red Deer Polytechnic leads NAIT 2-0 in the best-of-5 Alberta Colleges Athletic Association women’s hockey final.

The Queens won Friday’s Game 1 2-0 and Saturday’s Game 2 4-2.

Valleyview’s Jailyn Bablitz and Wembley’s Arilyn Toews each scored a goal in both games.

Grande Prairie’s Char Sallis plays for NAIT.

The Ooks will host Game 3 Friday night.

CCAA Basketball

Grande Prairie’s Logan Rempel and his Holland Hurricanes finished seventh at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Championship.

They beat Calgary’s St. Mary’s 100-85 in their last game.

The host team from SAIT beat the Dawson Blues from Quebec 96-81 in the final.
