DRAV program to end March 31, Drive Happiness to continue

Mar 22, 2023 | 6:00 AM

A project called Driving Rural Access to Vaccines will end March 31 in Grande Prairie.

It was started in the spring of 2022 by the not-for-profit group Drive Happiness to get people 18-years-old or older to vaccine-specific appointments.

The Drive Happiness service that takes seniors anywhere they may need a ride, will continue.

Spokesperson Mawada Tarhuni says this covered a variety of appointments.

“This could be your annual influenza shot. This could be your pneumococcal vaccine, and this could be any other vaccine you may require, as long as you are 18 years and older, we would pick you up and drop you off completely free of charge.”

Tarhuni says there has been what she calls “an incredible response” since Drive Happiness came to this area, with 31 riders and 10 volunteer drivers.

“We’ve completed quite a bit of rides successfully. We’ve had wonderful feedback from drivers expressing how incredibly rewarding and needed the service is and riders overjoyed that now, they have a supplementary service to the existing, available transportation in Grande Prairie.”

The rides can be for anything from a doctor’s appointment to visiting a friend.

Tarhuni says Drive Happiness will continue as long as there are people willing to be volunteer drivers.

She adds anyone who wants a ride or to volunteer as a driver can check here. They can also call 780-424-5438 or call toll-free at 1-888-336-4503.
