Kevin McLean to run for Grande Prairie NDP nomination

Apr 10, 2023 | 1:24 PM

Former city councillor and Alberta Liberal Party candidate Kevin McLean has announced his intentions of becoming Grande Prairie’s NDP candidate in the upcoming provincial election.

McLean previously served two terms on Grande Prairie city council from 2010-2017 and ran in the 2022 by-election for a vacant seat on council following the passing of John Lehners.

He also has past provincial political experience, running for the Alberta Liberal Party in Grande Prairie-Smoky in 2012 and 2015, and in 2019 for St Albert.

McLean says he believes in Rachel Notley after being endorsed by the party to be the candidate.

“I believe she’s tested and true. She’s strong, and she’s been there before and she knows she wants to fight for all Albertans, and I don’t believe just for a certain sector.”

Despite running previously as a Liberal candidate he says; “I think it’s a time in Alberta where it’s very important which direction we go. I believe the direction with Rachel Notley is the way to go for Alberta.”

“We have a great opportunity to do things differently.”

McLean says working as a team member on city council in the past will help him if he is lucky to be elected as the NDP candidate in the Grande Prairie riding.

He hopes Grande Prairie will go orange for the first time in the city’s history come May 29.

The NDP nomination meeting is on April 30, with no other candidates running as of yet.
