Alberta to bolster economic corridors with Saskatchewan and Manitoba

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The prairie provinces have announced a new partnership that they say will boost trade and the economy.

The Governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on joint economic corridor projects.

The three provincial governments say they will work together to eliminate regulatory inefficiency and uncertainty in hopes of attracting and developing nation-building projects.

A media release from the governments states that they will seek to identify and prioritize strategic infrastructure projects that will enhance transportation between the provinces and around the world.

The economic corridors will support the movement of critical resources, energy and utility projects, and secure national supply chains.

Alberta Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen said the province is proud to partner with Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

“New nation-building projects need government cooperation and political will,” said Dreeshen. “We need to cut red tape. We need to get building things like we used to. We need to make good jobs and an affordable life a priority. We can start to show people that, yes, Canada is a place you can do business again.”

The release said that Canada was united by nation-building initiatives such as the transcontinental railway, which tied the country together through improved travel and trade.

According to Statistics Canada, Alberta exported more than $138 billion in goods in 2021, including items shipped by pipelines, road, rail, air, and marine. Non-pipeline exports from Alberta totalled more than $48 billion.
