Alberta Wildfire asking residents to check winter burn sites
With dry conditions last fall and a lack of moisture in the ground, Alberta Wildfire is urging anyone who performed winter burning, to go back and ensure the fire is completely extinguished.
They recommend going back to your winter brush pile or windrow burning projects to ensure the fires are extinguished, as these winter burn sites can cause spring holdover wildfires.
These occur when a burn site isn’t completely extinguished during the winter, and continues to burn throughout the winter under the snow, emerging in the spring as a wildfire.
Along with the dangers of spring holdover wildfires, Peace River Firefighters also want residents to be aware of the moderate fire danger in the Peace River Forest area, which has seen recent warm temperatures melt snow in low-lying fields, exposing fine fuels such as dry grass.
