Grande Prairie biathlete reflects on past season ahead of April 29 fundraiser

Apr 22, 2023 | 6:00 AM

A Grande Prairie athlete describes his first taste of international competition this past winter as “a super fun experience.”

Biathlete Liam Tinworth represented Canada at races in Italy and Austria.

“I had some strong ski times, but I wasn’t able to shoot well enough to really compete. I got a couple top 50 results but that was about it.”

Tinworth says with a good summer of training, he should be able to improve on those results. Most of his training is done in the summer.

“There will be a lot of road biking. A lot of running. Running up mountains in Canmore too. There’s also roller skiing which we’ll do a lot of. (It will be) a lot of hours.”

Tinworth now lives in Canmore and trains at the Canmore Nordic Centre, the host venue for the Nordic skiing events at the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Besides the races in Europe, Tinworth won two silver medals in individual races and a bronze in the relay with Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games.

“It was super fun to go to PEI. It’s a pretty tight-knit community with biathlon, so it’s fun racing against boys I know.”

Tinworth says he was proud to get a chance to compete for Canada, adding getting to do that was motivating.

He says improving to top 30 finishes is the goal for the upcoming season.

An auction and supper in support to raise money to help pay for training, travelling expenses will be held Saturday, April 29 at the Lions Den Pub.

“It’s nice to see everyone coming together to show their support. Definitely, really motivating and heart-warming to see everyone in the community stepping up, ” says Tinworth, adding he is grateful for the support from everyone, especially his parents.
