The Salvation Army perfects large-scale emergency meal prep during Pine Lake event

May 3, 2023 | 6:01 PM

As part of Emergency Preparedness Week (May 1-6), The Salvation Army held a cooking competition this weekend at its Pine Lake Camp.

More than 50 people, plus the entire 20-unit Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) vehicle fleet from across Alberta, were in attendance, marking the first time the entire fleet was in the same location — about 30 minutes southeast of Red Deer.

Those participating were tasked with practicing and perfecting recipes for large-scale emergency events where The Salvation Army would be deployed.

“This event had eight of The Salvation Army’s EDS mobile units cooking and preparing a meal as if in a real deployment. The competition was a training opportunity to try out new recipes in the units. All units had to prepare a healthy meal with a vegetarian or vegan option,” explains Brandie Howey, Divisional Manager for Marketing and Communications.

“Teams came from across Alberta, from High River, Calgary, two from Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Lethbridge, and Lloydminster. The teams made so many delicious meals and options that were easy to prepare and serve, and they will be a great addition to our new EDS recipe book. The proud winning team was from Edmonton, who made Jigg’s dinner as their showcase meal.”

In the past, The Salvation Army has responded to many large-scale events, such as the Fort McMurray wildfire, the Slave Lake wildfire, and the southern Alberta floods.
