Court update: Dates set for a murder trial, sentencing in two other cases

May 4, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for the man charged after a 2021 murder in Falher.

The trial for Roderick Ellery-Sorensen of Falher is scheduled for March 4 to 8, 2024 in Peace River.

He was charged with second degree murder and two counts of arson with disregard to human life after a fire on Central Avenue in Falher on September 22, 2021.

RCMP said at the time that human remains were found inside the trailer after the fire was put out.

The name of the person that died was not released.

A neighbouring house and apartment building were also damaged in the fire.

Both accused in stolen property investigation sentenced

Alberta Justice says both people charged after a stolen property investigation in 2022 have now been sentenced.

Michael Siemens of Bezanson has been given a total of 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and possession of a prohibited firearm.

Previously, Monica Diane L’Hirondelle from High Prairie was given a $300 fine after pleading guilty to a charge of possession of stolen property under $5,000.

They were charged after a break and enter at a downtown business on June 26, 2022.

Police used video surveillance and foot patrols to eventually track down two vehicles and a hotel room used by the suspects.

Mounties recovered property that had been stolen from the business, brass knuckles, and a small amount of crystal meth.

Two year CSO sentence for one accused in drug, firearm case

Alberta Justice says one of three people charged in connection with a drug and weapons arrest has been given a two year Conditional Sentence Order.

Peter Zachery Chalick had already pleaded guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and careless use or storage of a firearm.

These sentences are served in the community under court-imposed conditions rather than in jail.

He and two others were charged after a tip from the public led police to a residence in Grande Prairie’s Pinnacle neighbourhood on July 31, 2020.

Drugs, firearms, ammunition magazines, brass knuckles, body armour, and stolen identification were all seized.

Earlier, Johnathan Kevin Derasp was given an 18-month suspended sentence on three firearms charges while all charges against Johna Wesley Chalick were withdrawn.

Derasp had originally been facing 73 charges while the other two had originally faced 39 charges each.
