Fires in northwestern Alberta continue to burn with evacuation orders still in place
Fire watchers say as of late Monday, a wildfire in Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation has burned close to 3,800 hectares. Sturgeon Lake officials say 1,600 people have left the area because of the fire and an unofficial count says 40 structures had been damaged. Evacuation orders for parts of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation and the MD of Greenview remain in place.
The Dunes West fire is still around 1,700 hectares in size. Residents in that area remain under an evacuation order.
The Bald Mountain fire, located 21 kilometres west of Highway 40 and 50 kilometres south of Grande Prairie, also remains out of control at close to 8,400 hectares. The fire has not crossed the Two Lakes Road.
The fire in Fox Lake remains out of control at just under 22,000 hectares. An evacuation order remains in place for the Little Red River Cree Nation.
