Grimshaw handmade freeze-dried liver treats finalist for Made in Alberta Readers’ Choice Awards

May 11, 2023 | 11:45 AM

A Grimshaw woman has taken her dog’s raw diet and turned it into a business, with locally sourced proteins… all made by hand.

Trina Remon and her husband JP Remon run The Dancing Dog Co. out of the little white house on Main Street Grimshaw; a historical building that has been transformed into a commercial kitchen.

Trina says when she got her first dog Henry six years ago as a puppy, she started researching raw dog food diets and dog nutrition.

She says during the pandemic, the couple took time to come up with a business plan to share her ways of raw food for dogs for other pet owners.

“I’ve always traveled with Henry and that always faced the biggest challenge of finding a locally made freeze-dried, raw food.”

Trina says she had observed older dogs and their health problems as they aged like; cancer, itchy and dry skin, and arthritis, as well as seeing how regular store-brand dog food was not providing proper nutrition.

“He’s never had a health problem and it’s just remarkable to see how vibrant he is… you’d never know that he’s a six year old dog.”

All of their freeze-dried liver treats are sourced as close to home as possible; the beef is from Grimshaw, chicken from Grande Prairie, and bison from Lacombe.

Trina notes all the proteins are human-grade, with no added hormones.

“Everything arrives frozen so it’s never been altered and we are just freeze-drying it right from frozen with no additional processing at all.”

“Even our bags, we decided to go with a Canadian manufacturer,” she says it’s Canadian as it gets.

Trina says being a finalist in the Made in Alberta Readers’ Choice Awards for her dog treats was exciting as she had previously gone to Made in Alberta events in the past.

“I think it’s important that this little business alone, we’re supporting local farmers and butchers in small towns and doing our best to engage with all the local retail shops.”

“It’s inspirational to see how one business can have a ripple effect.”

Their freeze-dried raw liver treats can be found at:

  • Grande Prairie’s Westgate Drive and Trader Ridge Bone and Biscuit
  • Grimshaw and Peace River Co-op Food Stores
  • Freson Brothers in Peace River, Fairview, and Grande Prairie
  • Johnny’s Sausage and Meats Grimshaw

The winner of the Made in Alberta Readers’ Choice Awards will win $5,000 and be featured in the Made in Alberta Awards coverage in Avenue‘s September/October 2023 print issue.
