Dunes West wildfire update

May 15, 2023 | 2:31 PM

Officials overseeing the fight against the Dunes West wildfire say the next 24 hours are critical, as high temperatures today coupled with gusting winds expected tonight are expected to provide challenging conditions for crews battling the out-of-control blaze southwest of the city.

The estimated size of the fire, is currently around 1,581 hectares.

A fire guard has been established around the entire perimeter of the inferno, with operations today focusing on the Spring Creek area as well as hot spots throughout the evacuation area.

Officials are also stressing concern over air quality throughout the region today, due to smoke from wildfires.

The current air quality index for the Grande Prairie region is 10+, which is extreme, and Environment Canada does have a special air quality statement in effect for the entire region.

1,820 residents have registered at the Evacuation reception centre at Bonnett’s Energy Centre.

With the evacuation order being downgraded to an alert in some areas, some residents in those areas are being allowed to return to their homes.

A Welcome Home Guide has been developed which has information and resources to help people, such as dealing with utility disruptions, and smoke deodorizing.

The guide is available at the reception centre, at the front desk of evacuee’s hotels, and online on GPREP’s website.
