Clayton asking people to be prepared this fire season

May 16, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton is asking people to be prepared in light of the fire season we are having this year.

“On the City of Grande Prairie website, you can find where you can have an emergency plan and what you should do to be prepared.”

“I encourage people to stay informed of weather conditions and advisories in your area. GPREP is the organization that will continue to message more details on that fire.”

Clayton is referring to the Dunes West wildfire. It is still listed as out of control. Clayton adds the city is supporting GPREP and the County of Grande Prairie in efforts to fight the blaze.

“With that, as you’ve seen, there are many fire service groups here from multiple municipalities including the City of Calgary, Chestermere, St. Paul… various communities across the province, as well as the army has come.”

Wildfire evacuees from the Dunes West area, MD of Greenview, and the Bald Mountain area are among those that have been directed to Grande Prairie.

Clayton says they are staying at hotels and with relatives.

“On a regular basis, there are up to 2,000 people that have come through the evacuation centre and GPREP continues to facilitate those individuals on a daily basis.”

The reception area for evacuees is at the Bonnetts Energy Centre.
