Provincial Election

Loewen re-elected in Central Peace-Notley

May 30, 2023 | 12:27 AM

UCP incumbent Todd Loewen won re-election in Central Peace-Notley, his third consecutive win in a provincial election.

Loewen defeated his closest challenger, Megan Ciurysek of the NDP, by close to 7,000 votes.

“Yeah, it does feel good. It’s always humbling to be elected, knowing that the people in the constituency put their trust in (me). It is humbling and I do appreciate it.”

“This is the third time that they’ve done that and so I just look forward to doing the best I can to represent their concerns.”

Loewen says there are some concerns for his constituents he wants to work on.

“I think there is a lot of concern about health care. I think we’ve actually made really good progress even in just the last six months with improving health care services. I think that’s a priority of Albertans.”

“Affordability is always top of mind too. I think Albertans are expecting to be represented well when it comes to dealing with Ottawa too.”

Loewen says rebuilding after the wildfires will also be something that will need his attention.

“There are a lot of homes that have been lost, so there are a lot of communities that need to rebuild too, so lots of work to do there.”

Loewen says a lot of land has already burned and there are several months left in the fire season.

Loewen had served as the Minister of Forestry, Parks and Tourism before the election was called.

“I serve at the pleasure of the premier so (staying in cabinet) remains to be seen. Of course, I would like to continue on. I think there has been some good work done and I think there is lots of good work to do yet. I would look forward to continuing in whatever portfolio she chooses.”

Loewen acknowledges his party has lost some ground since the last election province-wide. He says there were some harsh words and harsh positions taken during the campaign, but thinks Albertans decided Danielle Smith was the leader they trusted the most.

Election results will be made official June 8.
