The City of Grande Prairie has released a reading list entitled “Five Must-Reads to Explore Indigenous History and Culture” to coincide with National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Local Indigenous community members Wendy Goulet, Andrea Deleeuw, and Shauna Livesey helped with compiling the list; which the City hopes will encourage a broadening of the collective knowledge of Indigenous perspectives.

Among the books on that list are:

  • “21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act” by Bob Joseph
  • “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer
  • “Peace Pipe Dreams” by Darrell Dennis
  • “The Inconvenient Indian” by Thomas King
  • “Embers” by Richard Wagamese

Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a news release; “We appreciate the teachings offered to us from surrounding Indigenous communities as the City of Grande Prairie expands our connection and service to Indigenous communities.”
