BC Peace fire watchers looking for new fires after lightning strikes

Jun 26, 2023 | 2:29 PM

As many as 10,000 lightning strikes hammered northeastern B-C since Friday — almost half of them hitting Sunday — and wildfire crews are now keeping a close watch for any new blazes in that drought-hit area.

The B-C Wildfire Service shows recent rain has reduced the fire risk in parts of the northeast from extreme to low or moderate, but conditions remain very dry.

The wildfire service says more than 100 wildfires are burning across the province — with most of them in the Prince George fire centre.

The largest of those blazes, the Donnie Creek fire, has now burned more than five-thousand-745 square kilometres since it was sparked by lightning in May. (The Canadian Press)
