Grande Prairie Transit to run for free and with extended hours on Canada Day

Jun 28, 2023 | 4:02 PM

Grande Prairie residents will be able to access transit services for longer hours, and for free this Saturday.

The city announced the changes in order to make it easier for the public to take in Canada Day festivities at Muskoseepi Park.

Transit buses will operate under their regular Saturday schedule from 8 am to 9 pm this Saturday, with on-demand and accessible transit services being made available between any stops in GP between 9:15 pm and 1 am.

Residents can book rides until 12:30 that evening, either through the Grande Prairie My Ride app, by calling 780-830-RIDE, or online at gpmyride.app.ridewithvia.com

The day begins with the Canada Day parade at 2:30, starting at Hillside School and eventually making its way down 100th Avenue to the Northwestern Polytechnic parking lot.

Because of the parade, the city says that transit routes 4, 6, 7, and 8 will be unavailable from 1:30 to 3:30 on Saturday, while routes 1 and 3 will be re-routed during the parade.

The city adds the following bus stops will also be closed for parts of Saturday:

Route 3 (from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.): stop 302.

Route 4 (from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.): stop 402.

Route 8 (from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.): stop 802.

Route 1 (from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.): stops 3000, 164 and 166.

Route 3 (from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.): stops 3000, 308, 306 and 304.

Transit routes 2, 5, and 9 will run as normal during that time as they will not be impacted by the parade.
