Peace Region born hockey player taken in NHL draft

A hockey player born in Grande Prairie has been selected in the NHL draft.

Gracyn Sawchyn, whose parents originally hail from the Wembley and La Glace areas, was selected by the Florida Panthers with the 63rd overall pick.

Sawchyn played a year of minor hockey in Wembley before the family moved to the US.

Sawchyn played this past season with Seattle of the WHL.

Meanwhile, three players from the AJHL and National Junior A champion Brooks Bandits were also selected.

Hunter Malinoski was taken 153rd overall by Toronto, Aiden Celebrini was selected 171st overall by Vancouver, while CJHL player of the year Aiden Fink was selected 218th overall by the Nashville Predators.
