Alberta NDP calling on provincial government to help farmers

Alberta’s Opposition N-D-P has called for the government to compensate agricultural producers struggling with the fallout from natural disasters.

Heather Sweet, who is the critic for agriculture, forestry and rural and economic development, says the provincial and federal governments need to come up with support for producers by the end of this week.

She says the province needs to request the ability to start accessing AgriRecovery and AgriStability funding.

AgriStability is a program for Canadian producers to help with large declines in farming income, while AgriRecovery is a framework between the federal and provincial governments to determine cost sharing for disaster recovery. (Global News)
