City Hall invites people to say goodbye to the Leisure Centre

Jul 20, 2023 | 6:00 AM

City Hall is asking people in Grande Prairie to say farewell to the Leisure Centre ahead of its demolition set for this summer.

People can submit stories, pictures and memories to the city’s engagement website from now until September 8.

The building was built in 1976 and included a pool, the Johnny MacDonald Arena and a fitness centre.

The arena later became a soccer pitch.

The Leisure Centre was a host venue for various sports during the 1995 Canada Games, hosted soccer during the 2010 Arctic Winter Games, and was the home of the games office during the 2018 Alberta Summer Games.

City council decided in 2021 that it would be torn down along with the old Comp. high school because of structural issues.

“The Leisure Centre has been a monumental recreation facility in our community providing many years of fun, connection, and recreational space. We look forward to hearing the stories from residents, staff and community members on the impact this facility made and the legacy it will have in our community for years to come,” says Mayor Jackie Clayton in a release from the city.
