Canadian Grain Commission repeals changes to wheat grading

Jul 28, 2023 | 4:00 PM

The Canadian Grain Commission said it is repealing some changes to tolerances for weight and foreign materials it announced last week.

This includes changes announced for all grades of wheat in the following classes:

  • Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS)
  • Canada Western Hard White Spring (CWHWS)
  • Canada Western Extra Strong (CWES)
  • Canada Western Soft White Spring (CWSWS)
  • Canada Northern Hard Red (CNHR)

The commission cited stakeholder concerns as the reason for repealing the changes.

The Wheat Growers Association and National Farmers Union had sent a joint letter to Minister of Agriculture Lawrence MacAulay asking these changes be stopped, saying they were heavy-handed and would have a long-term negative impact on farm income.

They say farmers will soon be harvesting wheat that would grade # 1 but would have been classed as # 2 if the changes had come into effect on August 1 as planned.
