Over 2100 NWT wildfire evacuees in Grande Prairie
The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership says although the city of Grande Prairie is at capacity for accepting new evacuees from the Northwest Territories, they are still providing support.
In an update on August 25, GPREP says they have registered 2157 evacuees and approximately 239 pets from the Northwest Territories since August 13. 761 rooms in 26 different hotels and four campgrounds across the city are being occupied by 1276 evacuees. GPREP says they are extending room stays prior to check-out dates and will notify evacuees if there are any changes to lodging.
On August 30, GPREP put out a notice for evacuees of both the Northwest Territories and British Columbia for students that have evacuated to Alberta, that they can be enrolled in a local school for the start of the 2023/24 academic year. Families with children attending school are being asked to contact local divisions/schools to request the emergency enrolment. The option to enrol will be available until evacuation orders are downgraded.
Northwest Territory residents can also apply for the Education Travel Support Program as of Tuesday. The program is being offered through the territorial government and can provide financial relief of up to $750 per vehicle to those that evacuated due to wildfires by land to a southern jurisdiction, and $400 per vehicle that evacuated to another place within the Northwest Territories.
