School Zones

City prioritizes safety this back-to-school season

Aug 31, 2023 | 12:42 PM

School Zones go back into effect Tuesday, September 5, and Grande Prairie Enforcement Services (GPES) is reminding residents to be extra cautious this fall.

From 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days, drivers will need to slow down to 30 km/h in school zones, until June.

Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a release, “I ask each of our residents to prioritize safety as our students return to school. Let’s all be a part of ensuring that every student’s journey to and from school is safe and successful.”

GPES is asking drivers to also practice some additional safety measures, in order to ensure everyone has a fun and safe return to school:

  • Follow the 30 km/h speed limit in school and playground zones.
  • Slow down and always be ready for any stops.
  • Factor in extra time for your commute.
  • Stay attentive and alert at intersections and mid-block crosswalks.
  • Follow the lead of school safety patrols in their bright orange vests.
  • Be extra cautious when reversing from parking spots or driveways.
  • Keep eyes open for children between parked vehicles.
  • Give a clear 5-metre space from crosswalks or intersections.
  • Respect the zones marked as “no parking” or “no stopping.”
  • Keep sidewalks clear.
  • Always park on the side of the street that matches the pattern of traffic.

Additionally, GPES said in the release, “In the spirit of back-to-school safety, this September, Grande Prairie Enforcement Services will be on the lookout for any vehicles not adhering to the parking guidelines in school zones.”

GPES encourages parents and guardians to familiarize themselves with the drop-off zones, before the first day.

Playground Zones also remain in effect, with speed limits dropping to 30km/h daily, from 7:30 a.m. to one-hour after sunset.
