A student at the Grande Prairie Composite High School has been selected to serve on the province’s 2023-2024 Minister’s Youth Council.

Daisy Nellis was selected out of 183 applicants, after actively displaying leadership and using her strong voice on a number of local community groups, including the City of Grande Prairie’s Youth Council, her School’s council, and GPPSD’s Student Advisory Committee.

She added in a release, “I am super excited for this new opportunity and look forward to sharing ideas and learning at the provincial level.”

Nellis will now collaborate with 40 peers from across the province over the course of the school year, brainstorming new innovative ways to improve education in Alberta.

Sandy Macdonald, GPPSD Superintendent says Nellis has done an excellent job being a voice for her fellow students and is very thankful she is being given this opportunity to showcase her abilities.

“We are grateful to Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, and Alberta Education for giving students a chance to share their voices – fostering the leaders of tomorrow.”

The Minister’s Youth Council will meet in person three times over the course of the school year, in hopes of bringing diverse life experiences, knowledge, and skills to the education system in Alberta.
