Sep 20, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The energy business in the Peace Country will be among the things featured at the World Petroleum Congress today in Calgary.

Representatives from the City and County of Grande Prairie and the M.D. of Greenview will be talking about opportunities in this region for the petroleum business.

The group will include Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton.

“On a regular basis, we like to talk about investment opportunities and attraction to a significant larger industry.”

“This World Petroleum Congress, as it mentions in the title, is having the world in Calgary. We know that this event that is being hosted by the three municipalities has guests that will be attending from around the world.”

Clayton says provincial ministers will also join in to talk about the importance of the Peace in the energy business.

“The Minister of Environment (and Protected Areas Rebecca Schultz) will highlight on the opportunities in Alberta as we continue to talk about what are the next steps and how you can have clean energy and still be productive.”

Clayton says Grande Prairie being close to the Montney and Duvernay fields makes it what she calls “a significant player” in the natural gas business.

“I think we need to continue to have those conversations about the future, not only in having a clean resource but also for expanded economic development and growth of our region. Those conversations are extremely important.”

Clayton says the congress is a great opportunity to have people from around the world in Alberta to talk about the future of energy and the province’s importance in the global energy sector.
