JASPER, AB – An investigation is underway after the discovery of a bighorn sheep ram’s carcass in Jasper National Park.

Officials said that on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, a visitor reported that one bighorn sheep ram’s carcass was located near Jasper Lake in Jasper National Park. According to Parks Canada, the head had been removed. Staff responded and discovered a second ram’s carcass in the area, also without a head.

The area has been closed off until further notice for public safety. Officials stated that a poaching offence likely took place between 4 p.m. on October 16 and 10 a.m. on October 17.
