Storm home win marks the start of local sports this weekend

Storm

Tomis Marinkovic had a hat trick, Nicholas Jones made 26 saves and the Grande Prairie Storm beat visiting Canmore 6-1 Friday afternoon.

This was the Storm’s Hockey Hooky game and had a start time of noon.

The Storm will host Olds Saturday night. Face-off will be at 6 p.m.

NWJHL

In the Northwest Junior Hockey League Friday, Wheat Kings at Dawson Creek, Sexsmith at Fairview and Beaverlodge in Fort St. John.

Saturday, Peace River at the Wheat Kings, Beaverlodge in Fairview and Fort St. John in Dawson Creek.

All those games start at 8 p.m.

Football

There are two games Friday in the Mighty Peace Football League playoffs.

The Grande Prairie Phoenix play Whitecourt. Kick off at 5:30 p.m.

Peace Wapiti Academy and Fort McMurray will start at 8 p.m.

The two winners will advance to play St. Joe’s and Sexsmith in the Peace Bowl semi-finals. The two losing sides will move to the Athabasca Bowl playoffs.

Wolves

The Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves basketball teams open the season Friday and Saturday at home against The Kings University. Game times are 6 and 8 p.m. Friday and 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday with the women’s game first both days.

Volleyball visits The Kings University on the same days at the same times.

Women’s soccer visits The Kings University Saturday at 2 p.m. and Concordia Sunday at noon. Men’s soccer visits Concordia Friday at 4 p.m., The Kings University Saturday at 4 p.m. and Concordia Sunday at 2 p.m. The Friday men’s match is a make-up game from one that was postponed earlier in the year because of poor air quality.

This will mark the end of the soccer regular season.
