Alberta government announces help for non-profits

Nov 2, 2023 | 12:52 PM

Non-profit and charitable organizations in Alberta now have one-stop access to supports and services to start, manage and grow their organization.

Officials with the Alberta government say non-profit and charitable organizations often rely on government resources to help them organize, launch, manage and grow. Alberta’s government says it provides multiple resources to these organizations to ensure they operate efficiently and correctly.

To simplify access to these resources, government officials say the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Status of Women has launched a new online tool for those working and volunteering in non-profit organizations to find and access services, funding and programs available to support them.

“Non-profits make a positive difference in the lives of all Albertans. We’re continuing to support the important work they do by launching a new web tool that makes it easier for non-profits to find and access resources,” says Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women.

In 2021, provincial officials say the Red Tape Reduction Non-profit Industry Panel identified that Alberta non-profits had difficulty accessing supports and navigating information about services provided by Alberta’s government. The government says the panel suggested that a one-window approach could assist the sector in identifying relevant services and funding opportunities. This new tool is hoped to be the answer to navigation difficulties.

“This web tool represents Alberta’s initiative to eliminate administrative barriers for non-profit organizations,” adds Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction. “It aims to enhance access to information and grant funding, thereby supporting non-profit and volunteer sectors in delivering more efficient programs and services. We are committed to reducing red tape within the non-profit sector and expanding this tool to support our red tape reduction efforts across the government.”

The government says these organizations provide meaningful support that impacts the lives of Albertans and builds vibrant communities. The new online tool is said to include access to the most commonly used supports that will help non-profits and charities provide more efficient and effective services. These supports include:

  • sector information
  • non-profit management
  • board member and governance training
  • grant information and application support
