"During the Holidays, impaired driving increases"

Alberta Government encouraging residents “to get home safely during the holidays”

Dec 11, 2023 | 6:00 AM

The provincial government is encouraging Albertans to plan a ride home from holiday get-togethers and celebrations to limit impaired driving this holiday season.

In a release, the Alberta Government says impaired driving only increases during the holiday season, with 23,000 roadside sanctions issued for alcohol or drug-related driving since December 1, 2020.

According to the province’s statistics in 2021 alone, 19 people died and 450 were injured in crashes involving an impaired driver.

This year, the Alberta Government would like to ensure everyone has a safe and fun holiday, saying in the same release; “Those who drive impaired risk the safety and lives of themselves and others.”

Anyone caught operating a vehicle while distracted, fatigued, impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both, can face large fines, lose their vehicle, and have an interlock device installed for at least a year.

Anyone wanting more information on impaired driving, and how to prevent it, can visit the Alberta Government’s website.
