Traffic stop leads to seizure of multiple firearms at Grande Prairie home

On Tuesday, January 2, Mounties in Grande Prairie say they were doing proactive patrols in the Morgan Meadows area when they saw a vehicle travelling well over the speed limit.

Police pulled the vehicle over and found the driver and passenger were both in possession of a loaded 9 mm handgun, pepper spray, and bear spray.

Upon further investigation, RCMP obtained a search warrant for a residence in Grande Prairie that was associated with the passenger. Police found and seized a number of items including:

• 12 firearms
• 3 BB guns
• Ammunition
• Pepper and bear spray

A 15-year-old male youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with:

• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• Possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized
• Possession of a restricted firearm, with ammunition, without a licence

Also, a Grande Prairie resident, 22-year-old Marcus Lake was charged with:

• Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
• Possession of a weapon at an unauthorized place
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• Possession of a restricted firearm, with ammunition, without a licence
• Unsafe storage of firearms

Lake and the youth were both brought before a Justice of the Peace and were both released on conditions.

The youth is to appear in Grande Prairie court on January 8, Lake is to be at the same courthouse on January 24.
