Grande North Winter Festival partially cancelled due to extreme cold

Jan 10, 2024 | 3:01 PM

The City has announced some changes to this year’s Grande North Winter Festival, due to extreme cold temperatures forecasted for the weekend.

Now, any outdoor events set to run at the Bonnett’s Energy Centre, Montrose Cultural Centre or Muskoseepi Park are cancelled, that includes:

  • Skating Oval
  • Ice Slide
  • Snow Maze
  • Crokicurl
  • Skate Party at Muskoseepi with music
  • Horse and wagon rides

However, the City said in a release, the skating oval, ice slide, and crokicurl rink at the Montrose Cultural Centre will remain open all winter for residents to enjoy.

For this year’s rendition, the live entertainment and any events set to take place in the ticketed Ice Gardens will continue as planned, including:

  • Ice Carving and demonstrations
  • Ice Bar
  • Interactive Ice Carving
  • Apre Ski inside the Bowes
  • Maple Taffy
  • Games

Tickets for the Ice Garden are available on the Bonnett’s website for $10 per day, or $15 for the weekend, with children 12 and under getting in for free with a paying adult.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says they look forward to a great weekend at the Ice Gardens, adding “We’re rallying to provide the community with an event-filled weekend of fun, in the true Grande Prairie spirit.”

The Grande Prairie Storm is also still set to host two home games this weekend for Winter Fest, taking on Canmore Friday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m. and then Olds on Saturday, January 13, at 6:00 p.m.

Anyone wanting more information about the cancellation of some Winter Fest events can visit the City’s website.
