Storm trade deadline recap

Jan 16, 2024 | 11:40 AM

After a busy trade deadline day, the Grande Prairie Storm have released a recap to update their fans.

In their first move of the day, the Storm picked up ’04-born forward Cyprus Smith-Davis from the Notre Dame Hounds of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, in exchange for a player development fee.

General Manager Mike Bomersback said this acquisition was needed after the injury to Zach Wilson and the departure of Tomas Markinkovic, who had his rights traded to his hometown team, the Vancouver Giants of the WHL.

Bomerback said in a news release that Smith-Davis brings a little bit of everything to their forward line-up and “he’s a tremendous kid, who was an assistant captain with ND (Notre Dame).”

The second deal of the day brought in ’05-born winger Spencer Hughes from the Humboldt Broncos of the SJHL, for ’05-born right defencemen Oakley Mcilwain.

Bomerback also discussed this trade saying, “with Spencer, we are getting a speedy winger with good skill, and a quick shot and release. He’s an offensive-minded player who will help with the offensive side of our game.”

The final deal saw the Storm move two import players to the Melville Millionaires, also of the SJHL for a player development fee, Gaborik Carlson and Eliott Mikesch.

Bomersback thanks Mikesch, Carlsdon and Mcilwain for their contributions to the organization and wished them all the best in their future endeavours.

The Strom are back in action tonight (Tuesday, January 16) in Drumheller, to face off with the Dragons.

Puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
