The County of Grande Prairie is reminding residents to regularly perform chimney maintenance and follow safe heating practices; if you are using the chimney in your home over the cold winter months.
In the release, the County says Regional Fire Services have responded to four chimney fires over the past couple of weeks.
To help eliminate this trend, the County has now provided a list of emergency preparedness tips:
- Regular inspections by a qualified professional will identify hazards and prevent the buildup of creosote.
- If you have a chimney fire, cut off the oxygen supply immediately by closing the damper and air vents. (If it can be done safely and without risk to yourself) These steps can slow a fire’s progress.
- Have an evacuation plan in place and remember to call 9-1-1 if there is an emergency.
