Town council in Peace River approves $20k in emergency funding for women’s shelter

Peace River Town Council has approved $20,000 for the Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter.

People from the shelter went to council to ask for emergency funding.

The town says in a news release that the money will help in remediation efforts and in replacing the shelter’s furnaces to prevent any more mould issues.

“Council, and everyone at the Town of Peace River, recognizes the importance of the Women’s Shelter to our community and to the region, especially for those needing its services. The town understands the urgent need to finance the building fix, and we are proud of the fact that we are able to support the Shelter,” says Peace River Mayor Elaine Manzer in that same release.

The town says it has also written to provincial politicians to ask for financial help from the Alberta government.

The Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter Board Chair Carol Van Slyke says in an email to EverythingGP that they have been given the go ahead to put their building “back together” following professional cleaning and remediation. Air quality was also tested and affected areas were treated or replaces and sealant has been applied.

“The funding that the Town of Peace River is providing us is essential for the progress to complete the necessary renovations to the shelter. At this time, we are unable to house women and children who are fleeing abuse. With the limited shelter spaces in northern Alberta, this is detrimental,” says shelter executive director Sandra O’Doherty in that same release.

Town council in Grimshaw approved $2,500 for the shelter shortly before Peace River’s town council approved funding.

The Women’s Shelter Board says that the total cost for the project is $422,000 for fixing the black mould issue.
