Alberta Canola conference, AGM, Research Symposium in Grande Prairie Wednesday & Thursday

Jan 24, 2024 | 6:15 AM

Canola business people from around Alberta have gathered in Grande Prairie for Alberta Canola’s conference and annual general meeting today (Wednesday, January 24).

The organization’s Rick Taillieu says there is also a salute to a well-known Peace Country resident planned for the evening of Day 1.

“We are having a banquet to celebrate over 30 years of leadership from farmers in the Peace River region on Alberta Canola’s board.”

“We’re going to specifically recognize one very special farmer from the Peace Region (and) that’s Mr. Walter Paszkowski for his lifetime of work in the agricultural industry, supporting the Peace River region and helping make Alberta Canola the organization it is today.”

Taillieu says they “really wanted to take this AGM to the Peace Country.”

“The Alberta Rapeseed Association back in its day was actually formed in the Peace Country. (It) later became the Alberta Canola Commission.”

“We don’t get to the Peace all the time, so we really want to put on a good show for the Peace River growers.”

The get-together will also include Alberta Canola’s Research Symposium. It will go tomorrow morning (Thursday, January 25).

Researchers will talk about what they are working on. Farmers will have a chance to offer suggestions for other projects.

Taillieu says things like clubroot and the impact of too-wet or too-dry weather are areas researchers are looking into.

“But what we really need to know is is there a pest issue that’s emerging in the Peace that maybe we’re not aware of? Are guys seeing things in their own field that they would like more work done on?”

Taillieu says the more farmers they can hear from, the more his organization can work to make sure its research is meeting the needs of producers.
