County of Grande Prairie added to Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance program

Jan 25, 2024 | 1:10 PM

The provincial and federal governments have expanded the Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance program to include 23 more municipalities.

The County of Grande Prairie is among those that have been added.

A release from the province says the funding will open on Monday, with the application deadline set for February 22. What the government calls extraordinary costs up to March 31 can also be included.

“We’ve seen a high uptake for this AgriRecovery initiative across the province. I’m pleased Alberta’s government was able to work with the federal government to expand this financial support to additional regions impacted by severe drought and extreme heat conditions. I will continue to look out for the interests of our hard-working livestock producers,” says Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson in that same release.

Producers from areas that were eligible before are also allowed to apply if they haven’t already.

The previously included municipalities included Saddle Hills, Birch Hills and Clear Hills counties and the MD of Spirit River, Fairview and Peace.

The County of Northern Lights and Northern Sunrise and Mackenzie counties were also included previously.

To be eligible, ranchers must have altered grazing practices for 21 days. The money is meant to cover losses as a result of maintaining female breeding animals.

Applications are being taken through the AFSC website.
