Province releases updated numbers on substance-related deaths

Numbers compiled by the province say that Grande Prairie recorded 34 deaths related to substances from January through October 2023.

Of those, 29 were from non-pharmaceutical opioids and five from alcohol.

In all of 2022, there were 50 deaths from substances, and 51 in 2021. There were 44 in each year from opioids. Most of those non-pharmaceutical, although there were five deaths from pharmaceutical opioids in 2022 and two in 2021.

There were also five alcohol-related deaths in all of 2022 and nine in 2021.

Methamphetamine accounted for 12 of the deaths in 2023, 17 in 2022, and 28 in 2021.

Grande Prairie also had the third-lowest rate of deaths per 100,000 persons in 2023 out of Alberta’s seven biggest cities at 44.5.

Lethbridge had the highest, Fort McMurray the lowest.

Across Alberta from January through October last year, there were 1,690 deaths from all substances, 1,563 of those from opioids.
