New women’s champion for Alberta

Tough loss for the Kayla Skrlik team in the final of the Alberta women’s curling championship played Sunday in St. Paul.

Selena Sturmay stole a deuce in the last end to edge Skrlik 6-5.

Sturmay will represent Alberta at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. It starts February 16 in Calgary.

The Skrlik team was the defending Alberta champion.

Return trip to the Brier for B.C. Peace curlers

Two B.C. Peace curlers are headed back to the Brier.

Jason Ginter, originally from Dawson Creek, Sterling Middleton, originally from Fort St. John, and the Catlin Schneider rink beat Jason Montgomery from Victoria 5-2 in the final played in Esquimalt.

The Schneider team is also based in Victoria.

Ginter and Middleton were at the Brier last year as part of the Jacques Gauthier team.

This year’s Brier starts March 1 in Regina

The Alberta men’s provincials will start February 6 in Hinton.

The Daylen Vavrek team from Sexsmith and Scott Webb’s team from Grande Prairie are both taking part.

Kevin Koe’s team will also be there.

Masters qualifier at GPCC

Two teams took part in a Masters qualifier Saturday at the Grande Prairie Curling Centre.

Kurt Balderston’s team won two games against Colin Griffith, 6-4 and 7-4.

The Balderston foursome, which includes third Glen Hansen, second Greg Hill and lead Roy Martin, will advance to provincials February 27 to March 3 in Morinville.
