Multiple weather records broke in first month of 2024

Some extreme weather was recorded across the province in January.

Nearly halfway into the month, Alberta experienced a cold snap.

On January 12, multiple other localities broke their lowest temperature records. It was a bone-chilling -42.5 C in Grande Prairie, beating the previous record set back in 1998 at -41.0 C.

Nearing the end of the month, Alberta basked in a warm spell that started on the 28th. Highest temperature records were broke for three consecutive days in GP:

  • 9.5 C on January 28, previous record from 2001 at 6.1 C
  • 10.0 C on January 29, no previous record on ECCC
  • 8.3 on January 30, no previous record on ECCC

The 30th also saw extreme high wind speeds, up to 112 km/h. The wind knocked many communities power out across northwestern Alberta, south of the Peace River.

A rainfall record was also broken on the 30th, with 1.2 mm recorded. The past record was in 1997 at 0.3 mm.
