Local sports this weekend

NWJHL

Northwest Junior Hockey League play-offs Friday, Peace River at the Wheat Kings and Dawson Creek in Beaverlodge for Game 1 in both series. Both start at 8 p.m.

Dawson Creek will be in Beaverlodge for Game 2 Sunday. Face-off at 2 p.m.

Navigators and Wheat Kings play Game 2 on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Sexsmith will play La Crete in the next round. Game 1 Saturday in La Crete starting at 7 p.m. with Game 2 Sunday at 2 p.m, also in La Crete.

Fort St. John will have a first-round bye.

Storm

Storm visit Drayton Valley Friday at 7 p.m.

Grande Prairie beat the visiting Thunder on February 11 in Grande Prairie in their last game.

The Storm have 46 points this season, the same as Canmore and two up on Camrose. Grande Prairie has a game in hand on both those teams.

NPHL

The North Peace Hockey League playoffs will continue Saturday with Grande Prairie in Spirit River and Valleyview in Manning. Both games start at 8:30 p.m.

Thursday night, the Rangers beat the Athletics 8-6 to even their series at 2-2.

Manning downed Valleyview 7-3 to take a 3-1 series lead.

Dawson Creek completed a four-game sweep with a 9-1 win over Fort St. John.

Wolves

Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves volleyball hosts Medicine Hat College Friday at 6 and 8 p.m.

Basketball visits Medicine Hat College Friday at 6 and 8 p.m. and Briercrest College Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.

This will close out the regular season for both sports.

Numb Bum

The Wapiti Off-Road Association’s Numb Bum 24-hour motorcycle, ATV and UTV race is set for Saturday and Sunday at Clairmont Lake. Racing starts at noon Saturday.

Skiing

Nitehawk ski hill is closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Alberta Winter Games.

The hill will be open on Family Day Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Tube Zone is open from 5-7 and 7:30 to 9:30 Friday, 11:30-1:30, 2:00-4:00 and 4:30 to 6:30 Saturday and Sunday and 2:30 to 4:30 Monday.

Ski and snowboard lessons are also available.

Whispering Pines is open Friday through Monday. Lifts run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The rental shop opens at 9 a.m.

There is a free BBQ Saturday and Monday. There is also free cinnamon buns on Sunday with a donation to STARS.

Powder King is open Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9-3, Saturdays and Sundays from 9-3:30.
